The bust of Field-Marshal the Duke of Wellington was fixed upon a site in the gardens by Governor Sir George Don on 10th April 1819. The bust was cast in bronze from guns captured by the Duke, and was erected at the cost of a day's pay from all the Garrison.
The column on which the bust stands is Roman, and came from Leptis Magna or Lepida in Libya. It was part of a consignment of antiquities which were sent as a present to the Prince Regent by an Arab ruler. When the ship carrying the antiquities called at Gibraltar, General Don commandeered the pillar for the Wellington memorial. (Source: Dr Sam Benady)
