The Virtual Tourist Site

What inspired this site ?

As a freelance photographer I generally get assignments to photograph specific shoots.   Enjoyable as this is, it does not allow you to be totally expressive as there are always client's needs to be considered.  Travel photography, however, allows you to photograph things for yourself, as you see them.

Secondly, I am tiered of the internet not having 'proper' photographic content.  Those that do, take forever to download.   This web-site has been designed to enable surfers to browse a wide range of photographs without waiting an eternity and yet not suffering in quality.

The technology.

When on assignment I generally tend to cart along tons of equipment.  Not on holiday.  I will normally carry my trusted Olympus OM4Ti body with a Vivitar 17mm and a Tamron 80-210 zoom lens.  If weight is a concern I will swap the lenses for a Zuiko 28mm and 135mm.  In the Washington DC, Las Vegas and San Francisco shoots I only took with me a Tamron 28-135mm zoom.  No filters have been used on any of the shots.

I am particularly fussy about my film.   Of late I have been using exclusively Fuji Professional film stock.  Not out of preference but because of availability in Gibraltar.  My preferred film stock was Kodak's Ektachrome 100Plus Professional Film.

To put these pictures on the web, the slides were scanned using an Olympus ES-10 Scanner which is superb for web-graphics.   Because of the speed considerations, you will notice a degradation in the picture quality.  This was necessary so that the WWW didn't become the World Wide Wait and you lost interest.  The JPEG format used for the pictures also reduces the quality somewhat, particularly when there are straight lines.

I have also used a Digital camera in the form of a JVC DVX40.  In fact, the Basel and Trinidad & Tobago shots are taken just using that.

But if you are going to go digital, then you need to go all the way.  For this reason I have invested in a full digital set of digital gear in the form of Nikon D70 and assorted lenses.  The Cyprus shots are the first to use these.

To design the web pages, Microsoft's Front Page was used but no use was made of their pre-defined layouts.  Its all 'home grown'.

The locations.

Some of the locations I have visited purely for pleasure whilst others have been combined with a work related visits and I have had to use whatever free time there is to steal a few shots.  One thing is for sure, I have enjoyed all of them!
